The Washington Redskins will begin their training camp next month, and in it, the team will get to see if young quarterback Dwayne Haskins can take over the job of starting quarterback. According to one former Washington player, however, Haskins would be better served not starting during Week 1.

According to former Washington running back Clinton Portis via 247 Sports, Haskins should not start Week 1. Portis doesn’t believe that Haskins is a bad player, but simply thinks that Washington’s schedule is so tough in the first few games.

“The comments come out, coach (Jay) Gruden says ‘Well Haskins, his talent is obvious, and he deserves a chance to start.' True,” said Portis. “I think it's too early, and we've been having this conversation for the past three or four weeks, I think it's too early to put Haskins into the fire because of the beginning of your schedule. This could be make or break, and I don't think you want to start Haskins off behind on the eight ball.”

Portis references Gruden’s moments about Haskins deserving a chance to compete for the starting job. However, Portis clearly thinks Haskins would be better served getting eased into an easier schedule.

To start the year, Washington will have to face the Eagles on the road, the Cowboys in Washington, the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football, and then the New York Giants.

Needless to say, that’s a brutal stretch of four games, especially for a rookie quarterback.

Three division games and a primetime match against one of the most dominant defenses in football isn’t ideal, but if Haskins proves that he is the best quarterback during training camp, then Jay Gruden may not have much of a choice in who to start.
