New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees believes sports serve as a necessary distraction from the rigors and stressors of everyday life.

Brees suggested sports are as pivotal in uniting the citizenry as any other facet of American society and feels people “need sports right now” (via Mike Triplett of ESPN):

“That's typically something that's really brought us through a lot of tough situations throughout our country … I think people have been able to lean on their local sports teams or national teams to just unite them and get their minds off the challenges of daily life or daily struggle.

“We don't even have that right now, and I think that's another reason why this is so tough. And obviously we hope that football can be back to normal, or this can be back to normal so that we can play real football.”

Brees also described the possibility of the Saints playing in empty stadiums, “really weird.”

Of course, the whole country is devoid of sports at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Save for WWE's WrestleMania show and tentative plans for an NBA HORSE competition, sports fans continue to await a final call on either the resumption or cancelation of leagues such as the NBA and MLB.

The NFL has been fortunate to be in the offseason period during the madness, though they have not fully avoided the implications of the illness. The 2020 NFL Draft will be fully virtual, and many believe OTAs will be canceled.

In any case, Brees — like many fans — yearns for the return of sports as a staple in American life.
