Moon Knight has been on Disney+ for three weeks now and the hype surrounding it is looking good at the moment. But for all the positive reactions going around, there's bound to be one that will shed a light on one of the series' mishaps. This certain criticism comes from no other than Shang Chi's Simu Liu when he called out the Marvel series for its poor usage of Mandarin in its second episode in a single tweet.

Liu's strong take on that one particular scene from Moon Knight's episode two isn't baseless at all. In it, Ethan Hawke's Arthur Harrow, the series' primary antagonist, is showing Oscar Isaac's Steven Grant around his community of followers. While the pair were walking, the cult leader converses with a woman playing soccer. The thing is, the conversation happened in Mandarin and its usage wasn't really done well.

The exchange between Harrow and the girl was not subtitled, with the caption only saying they are “speaking in Mandarin.” And as expected, a flurry of reactions flooded Twitter over this Moon Knight mishap.

For its part, Mandarin has a reputation for being a difficult language to learn and speak. This comes as it has a variety of tonal pronunciations that make it hard for native English speakers to master. The thing is, Marvel should have included the proper subtitles when it was shown on Moon Knight more than a week ago. In doing so, there could have been an instant explanation to what Harrow and his follower were talking about.

While this mistake with Moon Knight is one that's being talked about right now, it's not the first time Marvel has been called out due to this kind of issue. The most notable one before this was in Avengers: Endgame when Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye spoke horrendous Japanese as he was fighting gangsters in Tokyo.

The hope remains that Shang Chi star Simu Liu's tweet can act as a wake-up call for studios to focus more on the detail, rather than just glossing it over. As of the moment, Marvel has not released any statement on this matter.
