The Philadelphia 76ers shipped of the team’s #42 overall pick in the second round along with Jonathon Simmons to Washington Wizards, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The 2019 NBA Draft has not disappointed in the slightest due to an immense amount of trades and extreme movement from various teams all over the draft board. Of course, despite all that draft night movement, the top three picks all stayed the same, as expected, with Zion Williamson going #1 overall, Ja Morant going #2 overall and R.J. Barrett going #3 overall.

One team that was active throughout the course of the draft night was the Sixers, who started with five picks before moving around the board to nab the players they wanted. First off, they traded up to #20 overall to draft defensive genius Matisse Thybulle with a pick that first belonged to the Boston Celtics.

Moving on from Simmons’s contract clears up a bit more cap space for the cash-strapped Sixers, who need as much space as they can get if they want to retain both Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris this offseason in order to “run it back” with a team that was closest to knocking off the eventual champion Toronto Raptors.

With core players Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons on the roster for the foreseeable future, the Sixers did not need to bring in too many second-round rookies in the 2019 NBA Draft – other than a high-floor defensive wizard like Thybulle, obviously.
