With the San Antonio Spurs trading Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, they finally can move on from a chapter of their history that got ugly this past year. After years of success, mistrust built up on both sides over the handling of Leonard's mysterious quad injury.

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was constantly forced to answer questions about the injury even though no one really knew what was going on. According to Michael Wright of ESPN, Popovich even begged Leonard multiple times to let them announce he was out for the season, only for Leonard to decline because the star felt he would ultimately return to the lineup:

On more than one occasion, Popovich begged Leonard to let him announce to the media that the forward would be forced to sit out the season due to his injury, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. Believing he'd eventually return, Leonard declined each time, leaving Popovich to field queries from the media that he couldn't definitively answer. Popovich simply didn't know.

Leonard left the team on two occasions last season to rehab in New York with members of the Spurs rehabilitation staff in tow to work in concert with the forward's outside medical personnel, utilizing its rehab program.

It will be interesting to see how the Leonard situation plays out in Toronto. Nobody is quite sure the status of Leonard's health at the moment, so could he milk this injury even further and derail the Raptors before bolting to Los Angeles next summer? Or will he come back at 100 percent and lead the Raptors to dominance in 2018-19? It's unclear which Leonard shows up.
