The Brooklyn Nets duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, along with Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz have all been the stuff of headlines of late as their futures with their respective teams continue to be the talk of the town. All three superstars appear to be on the brink of finding a new home, and for their part, the San Antonio Spurs are reportedly keen on joining in on the fun.

To be clear, however, the Spurs are not interested in acquiring any of the three aforementioned stars. As a matter of fact, San Antonio is reportedly not even in the market for any player that could  help them get significantly better next season (read: full tank mode, on). According to LJ Ellis of Spurs Talk, San Antonio is looking to take advantage of these opportunities to gain more assets for the future:

How do the Spurs plan to use their cap space? The Spurs are actively looking to rent out their cap space in exchange for draft capital. With All-Stars like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell on the trade market, the Spurs are hoping to be handsomely rewarded for helping to facilitate the acquisition of one of those big names.

Previous reports suggest that the Spurs could be a potential third team in a blockbuster deal between, say the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets in a Kyrie Irving-Russell Westbrook trade deal. In this scenario, the Spurs might be willing to take on Westbrook's gargantuan deal (and perhaps buy him out?) along with a handful of future draft picks.

According to Ellis, the Spurs are more than happy to bide their time:

Although the Ayton domino has fallen, the Spurs are well aware that it could take a while for Irving, Durant and Mitchell to find new homes. It could be weeks or even months for clarity on those fronts. But all indications point to San Antonio being willing to wait as long as it takes. It’s a somewhat risky strategy because the Spurs may end up not being able to monetize their cap space — but it’s a risk the Spurs are reportedly willing to take.
