Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger restructured his contract to return to the team in 2021. However, his future with the Steelers after this season is murky.

Roethlisberger is coming off an impressive 2020 where he led Pittsburgh to 12 wins but they eventually exited early in the playoffs. While there were doubts that Big Ben would even be back in Black and Gold for the upcoming campaign, teammate Cam Heyward ultimately believes that Roethlisberger still has what it takes to lead the Steelers to greatness.

“We know he’s an explosive quarterback that can throw the ball all over the field,” Heyward said on NFL Network Tuesday morning. “But I think around [him], we’ve just got to be complementary, whether it’s on offense, defense, special teams.

“Ben’s still got the goods. Anyone that tells you otherwise, they haven’t really looked at football. You give that guy a good running game and tell him he doesn’t have to throw the ball 50, 60 times, he’s going to be that much more dangerous, and I think we’re looking forward to that. It’s going to be pretty good, longevity-wise, if he wants to keep playing.”

The Steelers had a dreadful run game last year, ranking fourth-last in the NFL. They did most of their damage in the air thanks to a strong receiving corps, but the offense could be more well-rounded now. Najee Harris, who Pittsburgh drafted last month, is a dangerous weapon and should certainly make their backfield a lot stronger.

Roethlisberger is heading into year 18 and while it's unknown if he plays past 2021 or not, the Steelers have the potential to make some noise if their veteran quarterback shows out. With a better running back on the roster, his arm will also take less of a beating.
