Kenny Pickett was seemingly crowned as the Pittsburgh Steelers' future at quarterback when he was drafted months back. That may still very well be the case.

But he may not be their present just yet. Based on the reports coming from Steelers insiders, Kenny Pickett remains a serious longshot at unseating veteran Mitchell Trubisky as the team's QB1 once the season rolls around.

Via The Athletic's Mark Kaboly:

Unless Trubisky gets hurt or plays terribly in camp and the preseason, it’s difficult to imagine a scenario where he doesn’t start the season as the No. 1. How long he stays there will depend on how he plays.

Pickett had reportedly been taking his OTA reps exclusively with the third-stringers, which is all but indicative that he's not being groomed as a starter from the get-go.

That Pickett received only third-string reps in OTAs and minicamp was downplayed. It’s not a good indication of what the Steelers’ plan is with their first-round pick, at least early in the season. You won’t hear that from the Steelers, but getting NFL-ready with limited first-team reps in camp and three preseason games won’t track for Pickett to start anytime soon.

Kenny Pickett will start for the Pittsburgh Steelers one day. But that day doesn't look to be in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
