Houston Texans star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is not expected to sign a new contract with the franchise ahead of the NFL's July 15th deadline, the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports.

Wilson also mentions that under the franchise tender, Clowney will make $15.9 million next season but shouldn't miss any games when the season starts in the fall. However, Clowney is “likely” to miss a “major portion” of training camp.

The Texans selected Clowney out of the University of South Carolina with the first overall pick in the 2014 draft. Clowney, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound linebacker, tore the meniscus in his knee in his regular season rookie debut that season. He only played four games in his first season. Clowney would later play in at least 13 games per season the next four years.

He's a three-time Pro Bowler and former SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012, his sophomore year with the Gamecocks.

Houston placed its franchise tag on Jadeveon Clowney in early March of this year, effectively keeping the dominant defensive player another season with the Texans until the team and Clowney's representatives can iron out a long-term deal.

Clowney has 29 sacks in 62 career games to his name—currently fourth in the franchise's record books.

He also led the defense in fumble recoveries in 2018 and finished second behind defensive end J.J. Watt in quarterback hits and sacks.
