First-year running back Karan Higdon is turning heads at the Houston Texans' training camp. Higdon, 22, is an undrafted free agent signed by Houston in May.

The 5-foot-10 running back spent four years at the University of Michigan, rushing for 2,616 yards for the Wolverines and scoring 27 touchdowns.

Via Aaron Wilson in the Houston Chronicle:

“I think he's getting better,” Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. “You know, young backs making the jump from college football. He had an injury when he got here. He rehabbed it hard during the offseason and into the summer.

“He's come back in shape. He's doing good. We'll see how he performs in the games and continues to get better.”

Higdon is competing for a roster spot in the Texans' running back corps. The injury O'Brien referenced was a sports hernia that prevented Higdon from competing in spring team activities.

With a Thursday night tilt with the Green Bay Packers on the horizon, Karan Higdon has a chance to further cement his status as a rising star in training camp. Other competing backs include undrafted Missouri product Damarea Crockett, seventh-round selection Cullen Gillaspia, and former Bills RB Taiwan Jones, among others.

Lamar Miller, meanwhile, presumably has the number one spot locked up. Miller, 28, is a former Miami Dolphins back who has been with the Houston organization since 2016. He made his first Pro Bowl last season.

Crockett is a 5-foot-11 RB who spent three years with the Tigers before declaring for the draft last April. Gillaspia was taken by the Texans in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. The 31-year-old Jones signed with Houston in May after he was released by the Bills, with whom he spent two seasons.
