The Division Heartland will be a stand-alone, free-to-play game, Ubisoft announced. The new The Division title will not need any prior experience in the The Division franchise. Hence, it's a perfect launching pad for new players to get into the The Division franchise. This strategy will help Ubisoft attract new people to get into The Division. It will also help them get more people into The Division 2. Apparently, Ubisoft still wants to do more with their 2019 title, with new content updates still planned for the rest of 2021.

The Division Heartland is free-to-play, requires no prior experience in the series

Heartland will arrive sometime between 2021 and 2022. To get updates and news, fans can sign up for the newsletter. It will apparently launch for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, but Ubisoft hasn't announced this yet. Ubisoft's Red Storm studio will be handling this project. They're prime candidates, especially since they've been working on the Tom Clancy franchise for decades. Heartland will give players a fresh new perspective on the The Division universe, allowing for a more holistic approach to the series.

Ubisoft's decision to make Heartland a free-to-play title is consistent with the strategies they revealed during their February earnings call. Ubisoft will be moving away from producing Triple-A games year in and out. While they'll still be releasing new Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs games in the future, they will no longer be the priority. Instead, Ubisoft wants to focus more on their games-as-a-service titles like Rainbow Six: Siege. There will also be a renewed focus on free-to-play games, seeing this segment of the market as the most ideal in making a profit.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft has also been making room in their servers for new games such as The Division Heartland. Games like Rainbow Six Vegas servers will shut down in the near future.
