Ben Simmons and Donovan Mitchell are widely viewed as the top two rookies this season, but the Boston Celtics do not seem to be wishing they had used their 2017 first pick on somebody not named Jayson Tatum. Tatum has not just been a solid player for the Celtics, he has rapidly become one of the team’s most important players this season. So important in fact that Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn said that he will pack his bags and leave Boston if Danny Ainge and his office trades Tatum – even if that meant getting San Antonio Spurs two-way forward Kawhi Leonard, per Ben Rohrbach of Patreon.com.

“If we had to trade Jayson Tatum for Kawhi Leonard, I’m leaving town.”

— Tommy Heinsohn, Celtics legend

This take from Heinsohn came amidst rumors that the Celtics could offer the Spurs a package that includes Jayson Tatum in exchange for Kawhi Leonard.

Maybe Tommy Heinsohn just doesn’t want someone with a questionable health. Leonard has missed a ton of games this season due to a “mysterious” quad injury. Or maybe, Heinsohn, like so many Celtics fans, has tremendous confidence in Tatum and his potential.

In his first season in the league so far, the former Duke Blue Devils is averaging 13.9 points and 5.1 rebounds while also having an excellent stoke from the outside. Tatum is shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 43.2 percent from the three-point area.

We have seen the Celtics get involved in crazy trades before, however, so who knows how close to reality this Tatum-for-Kawhi trade talks.
