The Golden State Warriors plan to start Glenn Robinson III at the small forward position to begin the regular season. The decision was made days ago but head coach Steve Kerr did not announce it to the media until Friday during pregame availability before their matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Warriors will lean on Robinson III to make a complementary impact in a ‘3-and-D' role with Stephen Curry and D'Angelo Russell leading the way in the playmaking department. Kerr already knew that he was an effective spot-up shooter but noticed that Robinson III is a ‘good cutter' and does the little details of off-ball offense in split action and movement.

“Glenn is rock solid,” Kerr said, via Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “He has more to his game than I realized. I always looked at him as a spot-up 3-point guy, but he’s a good cutter, understands our split action, our movement. I’m really glad Glenn’s here.”

With Klay Thompson sidelined, Robinson III will assume the role of being the team's top perimeter defender. This is an area where he has shown flashes of potential during his NBA career but hasn't been asked to do on a consistent basis in a large role. He can solidify himself as a highly effective on-ball defender against some of the league's toughest assignments if he manages to succeed.

A strong impact will be needed from Robinson III given the Warriors' lack of available depth at the position. They decided to waive Alfonzo McKinnie since they would save on salary cap spending as a result of his non-fully guaranteed contract. With Alec Burks sidelined for all of the team's preseason games due to an ankle sprain, their alternative options are currently depleted.
