The Washington Football Team are not making the playoffs, but there's something to watch out for about the organization beyond the regular season. Washington announced Tuesday via their official Twitter account that the team's new name and logo are about to get unveiled on Feb. 2.

Washington switched its team nickname to the generic-sounding Football Team in July 2020 following a decision to let go of the original β€œRedskins” moniker due to its anti-indigenous nature.

For nearly two years, Washington researched on how to move forward in terms of the team's brand identity, all the while carrying the Football Team nickname. But in February, the long wait is finally going to be over.

The guessing game can commence, but at least one name is out of consideration. According to Washington team president Jason Wright, the team's next name will not be Wolves (or Red Wolves).

Early on we understood Wolves β€” or some variation of it β€” was one of our fan favorites. As I've said all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously, and because of your interest in this name, we put Wolves on a list of options to explore fully. Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn't have been viable either for these and other reasons.
