The New England Patriots know that Cam Newton was the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. After spending the first nine seasons of his career with the Carolina Panthers, he has been released.

Now the quarterback is looking for a new home. And would you look at that, the New England Patriots are looking for a new quarterback. After having Tom Brady for the last 20 years, they lost him in free agency to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Due to this, many people have wondered whether Newton and the Patriots could be a potential fit. Would they mesh well together though? Or would it end up being disastrous?

It's pretty simple if you ask me, Newton would fit perfectly. Here's why.

Don't get me wrong, Newton comes with his question marks. He is far from perfect.

Immediately, a few things spring to mind. Newton's career completion percentage of 59.6 is definitely a little worrisome. As is the fact that he's only thrown for 4,000 yards once in his career (4,051 yards back in his rookie year of 2011).

You could also make a pretty big argument that the quarterback has only had one “elite” season. That would be his MVP year back in 2015, when he threw a career-high 35 touchdowns compared to a career-low 10 interceptions.

The 59.8 completion percentage wasn't great, but the 3,837 yards was the second-best in his career.

There are also a lot of positives with Newton though. He hasn't had a lot of “elite” seasons, but he's never been a liability. Newton's consistently an above-average quarterback.

Meanwhile, he's a mack truck and one of the best runners at the position. Look no further than the 58 rushing touchdowns he has for proof of that.

Why is he a perfect fit for the Patriots though? It's pretty simple, and it doesn't have anything to do with the stats.

Newton is a winner. Truthfully, I always argue it's a team sport and you can't give any one player all the blame for losing or all the props for winning. That being said, the experience of winning matters.

And Newton has it. I understand that's subjective and people will argue with it.

However, he's won a Heisman. He's been to a Super Bowl. Newton also has a Rookie of the Year award as well as an MVP under his belt.

Most importantly though, he 68-55-1 in his career as a starter. He wins.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots know a little bit about winning. And despite what people say, speculating that they want to try and tank for a quarterback in the NFL Draft next season, that's not happening.

New England still has an elite defense. They still have Belichick. As long as those things are there, the Patriots aren't going down quietly.

So why try and tank when you can win a Super Bowl? Newton wins games and he's already been there before. With that defense behind him and with Belichick leading the charge, there's no reason to believe Newton can't win it all.

The Patriots need a quarterback. And winning is one of the main criteria. Newton's seen it all and he's done it all (expect win that final game). Sounds like a pretty perfect match to me, and a perfect opportunity for Newton to add “Super Bowl winner” to his resume.
