David vs. Goliath. Walter White vs. Gus Fring. Batman vs. The Joker. These are just a few legendary matchups that have captivated audiences for years. However, each of those battles is somewhat competitive. With New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole and Boston Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers, it's pretty one-sided.

Devers blasted two home runs off of Cole when the two stars met on Thursday. It was another in a long line of moments where the 25-year-old got the better of one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Devers' success against Cole is so great that Bob Costas had this to say while calling his second home run of the night:

“Gerrit Cole might be bound for the Hall of Fame, but Rafael Devers owns him,” Costas called.

Devers tagged Cole for five runs off the strength of those two home runs. The Yankees ace allowed just three hits to hitters not named Devers in that game.

Cole seemed visibly frustrated after the game when speaking to the media. And he didn't seem to have much in the way of answers when asked why Devers is so successful against him.

“I'm open for suggestions,” Cole joked to reporters Thursday.

“You guys are all watching the game, too,” Cole said. “I mean, obviously he has the ability to ride the ball out at the bottom of the zone. He has the ability to catch up to my fastball, he's proven that, so both pitches were pretty well executed.”

Devers has faced Cole just 23 times in the regular season. However, he has seven hits against Cole. And six of those hits have left the ballpark. There is no player in MLB history with more home runs off Gerrit Cole than Rafael Devers.

“It's pretty wild,” Cole said of Devers. “He's just been able to hit everything. There hasn't been a mis-hit. Roll over one time. Line out one time.

“You're supposed to fail seven out of 10 times in this gig. I don't know what the deal is. We'll just have to keep at it, man. Just keep at it.”
