Most of the discussion in the offseason for the San Francisco 49ers revolves around the situation of wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who reportedly asked the team for a trade. But Samuel aside, the 49ers also have defensive end Nick Bosa's future to deal with soon. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan even revealed that the 49ers have not started talks for a contract extension.

Via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports:

Shanahan was asked if negotiations with Bosa have started.

“They haven’t,” Shanahan answered. “I'm sure that's a big tweet. I don't know if that's a big tweet or something, but no.”

Unlike Samuel, though, Bosa is guaranteed to be a 49ers player for at least one more season beyond the 2022 NFL campaign after San Francisco decided to pick up its 2023 option on him. That puts Bosa on a path to become a free agent by the end of the 2023 NFL season, with no certainty at the moment whether he would be with the 49ers or not beyond the duration of his current contract.

That's not going to rule out the possibility of the 49ers giving Bosa what could be the richest extension deal for a defensive player in the history of the NFL. After all, Bosa is still just 24 and is coming off a 2021 NFL season in which he posted 15.5 sacks to go with 52 combined tackles.
