Maybe he just literally hasn't thought about it yet. That might be the only explanation.

Paul Millsap can opt out of his contract to become a free agent next summer. And that makes a lot of sense for him to do, whether or not he sees his future as part of the Atlanta Hawks organization or not.

Millsap can make $21.4 million by opting into the final year of his contract, but if he opts out and remains a max-caliber player, he could sign a deal worth $33.6 million. Easy decision, right?

Millsap isn't sure yet.

Via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

“I haven’t decided anything, no,” Millsap told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday…

“I think the plan is to see how this season goes and go from there,” Millsap said. “I can’t predict what is going to happen. For me, it’s focus on basketball. Get through this year, try to get a championship for this team first of all. We’ll deal with all that during the summer time when we have all our options on the table.”

It's hard to imagine much going down that could sway Millsap away from opting out. But again, this shouldn't worry Hawks fans. It makes sense for Millsap to do this no matter what.

Millsap is coming off arguably his best season in the NBA and a third-straight All-Star appearance. He'll turn 32 in February so he is getting up there in age but he hasn't started to trend downward yet. Just the opposite, actually.

The addition of Dwight Howard and loss of Al Horford will make for an interesting dynamic this season as the Hawks look a little different. But it feels like Millsap is due for another big season and then next summer, huge pay day.
