Carmelo Anthony undoubtedly has his best chance at a title this season, but had it not been for Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers, he might not be on the Los Angeles Lakers right now, or in the NBA at all for that matter.

That sobering fact was not lost on Melo, who was candid during his appearance on the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. He opened up on how much the Blazers stint meant to him and the latter part of his career.

“Portland was real solid. They brought me in and I played right away. That's all I ever wanted to do man is just hoop. I wanted to be on the court playing with Dame and CJ. They opened their arms up, opened their city up to me and their organization. .. I had to be loyal to those guys.”

At the center of it all was Blazers star Damian Lillard, whom Carmelo Anthony had to gush over, both for selflessly opening up his franchise to the forgotten superstar while also identifying that he still had a lot left in the tank.

“Dame is a real one because Dame always knew like, ‘We don't care what nobody else is saying. We know you can play, I know you can play. I see you. I talk to you.' When you get somebody like that rocking with you, it makes that situation easier. … I always told myself Dame will always go down as one of my top dogs. Forget basketball. As a human being, it don't get better than that.”

Damian Lillard didn't need to say much in his response. The Blazers star simply RT'ed the exchange while calling Carmelo Anthony “Bruv” after his heartfelt words.

They may no longer be playing for the same team, but there's no doubt when the Lakers play the Blazers, Carmelo Anthony will be there to show Damian Lillard all the love.
