One major reason former New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski retired following the 2018 NFL season—only to come back this week when the Pats traded the WWE wrestler to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to reunite with quarterback Tom Brady—was an injury he suffered during Super Bowl LIII, the Patriots' sixth title in 20 years.

Gronkowski, turning 31 years old next month, explained to NFL Network's Jesse Palmer that he's still suffering from a quad injury sustained during that fateful Super Bowl victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Gronkowski left the NFL behind for a single season due to injury concerns and also advocated for the lawful consumption of cannabis products in the league as a means to manage pain for players. At one point, the four-time All-Pro First Team tight end even said he wouldn't come back to the NFL unless CBD products were authorized by league policy.

It's a big hang-up for Gronkowski, especially at a position that tends to take—and make—a lot of hits. In order for “Gronk” to maintain his good health and feel comfortable continuing to compete at a high level in the NFL, he needs to feel safe and secure. Perhaps CBD will make an authorized admission in the NFL in the coming years, but for now, Gronkowski will get a chance to compete for the Buccaneers alongside compadre Brady in a new home.
