In a move that was widely expected, the Arizona Cardinals have fired Steve Wilks after just one season as the team's head coach, according to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic.

The Cardinals hired Wilks after dismissing Bruce Arians last season, but the results were not exactly satisfactory. Arizona won just three games this season, marking the franchise's lowest win total since 2000.

The Cardinals never appeared to be competitive at any point this year, starting the season 0-4 and never recovering. As a matter of fact, their season-ending loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday was one of their more impressive performances of the 2018 campaign.

Arizona has missed the playoffs three years in a row after making back-to-back postseason appearances in 2014 and 2015, culminating in a 13-win season and an NFC Championship Game appearance during the 2015-16 campaign.

The Cards have made the playoffs just four times since 1999, including a surprising Super Bowl appearance during the 2008-09 season. What's worse, the Cardinals have only made five trips to the postseason since 1983. At that time, the franchise was still in St. Louis.

Prior to his short stint as head coach of the Cardinals, Wilks served on the Carolina Panthers' coaching staff for six years, first holding a post as the team's defensive backs coach from 2012 through 2016 and then being promoted to the Panthers' defensive coordinator in 2017.

Wilks also served as the defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears for three years and for the San Diego Chargers for two seasons before arriving in Carolina in 2012.
