Retired NBA marksman Ray Allen says he would have returned to the Celtics in 2016 if the team had landed Kevin Durant, according to a report from Darren Hartwell of NBC Sports.

Allen spent five seasons with the Celtics (2007-2012), knocking down several big shots along the way. According to NBC's report, the former No. 5 overall pick had a conversation with general manager Danny Ainge in 2016, noting that he would be open to rejoining the team if they were able to secure Durant in free agency.

Via NBC Sports:

“I had a conversation with (Ainge) and I told him this was my last-ditch effort. I would’ve went back,” Allen said on WEEI's “Ordway, Merloni & Fauria” radio show.

“This was when Kevin Durant was a free agent. He was thinking about going to Boston. And I said, ‘Hey, if you guys land Kevin, I would certainly look at lacing them back up one more time and try to make something good happen here in Boston.'”

At that time, Allen hadn't played for two season — not since his 2014 stint with the Miami Heat. He would've served as a fine role player alongside Durant, but the Celtics were unable to land him. Had this idea come to fruition, though, Boston would have certainly been a formidable side.

In the end, it seems Celtics fans are left to think of what might have been.
