On Tuesday night, news dropped regarding a massive contract extension for Joey Bosa of the Los Angeles Chargers. His five-year, $135 million pact will make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Joel Corry of CBS Sports provided further details on the contract, which features a whopping $78 million guaranteed upon signing as well as a staggering $102 million guaranteed for the life of the contract.

After being drafted 3rd overall by the Chargers in the 2016 NFL Draft, Bosa immediately paid dividends for the team by starting in 11 games and producing an impressive 10.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss per Pro Football Reference.

The 25-year-old has made the Pro Bowl twice in only four years of playing time, and he has finished in the top ten in sacks in two seasons: 2017 and 2019.

In his career, there are few other Chargers players that can approach Bosa’s swift rise through the defensive records books. In only 51 total games played, Bosa has already amassed 40 total sacks, which already puts him 8th on the all-time list for the team.

If Bosa continues his stellar production, he will likely reach the next player on the list’s total – Shawne Merriman’s 43.5 sacks – in fewer games than he took to reach that total (60).

Perhaps more impressively, Bosa has already bypassed Merriman’s tackles for loss total of 50 with an impressive 53 – already 5th-most in Chargers franchise history.

While that contract might be historic, it seems that the 25-year-old will be worth every penny.
