The Kansas City Chiefs will sign former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Sammy Watkins. This is according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter broke the news on the mean streets of Twitter:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Watkins' deal could be worth $48 million over three years.

Watkins was drafted by the Buffalo Bills as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He had a solid rookie season before a breakout sophomore campaign in which he caught 60 balls for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns.

But after three injury-hit years in Buffalo, he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams last offseason.  Watkins recorded 39 catches for 593 yards and eight touchdowns in what turned out to be his lone season in Los Angeles.

The Rams opted not to hand Watkins the franchise tag but were reportedly still going to make a strong push to keep the talented receiver. Apparently, that is all for naught. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Green Bay Packers were also reportedly in the mix for his services.

Kansas City recently decided to let Alex Smith go elsewhere, instead opting to go younger at the quarterback position. By bringing in Watkins, however, it now provides second-year gunslinger Patrick Mahomes a bigger target on the outside to work with alongside Tyreek Hill.

Generally speaking, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has relied on smaller, speed-styled receivers to get the job done. While that will almost certainly still be in play moving forward, having that bigger target for his young signal-caller can only help the situation.
