It is not unusual for star players to take a meeting with their team’s owner. Typically, they wouldn’t garner a lot of attention. But when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and his star wide receiver, Dez Bryant, meet in the days ahead, everyone is going to want to know what is discussed.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams, that meeting is going to come soon.

The expectation is that Jones is going to ask Bryant to take a pay cut. Bryant is set to make $12.5 million next season and count $16.5 million against the cap. For a guy that hasn’t had a 1000-yard season since 2014. He’s also only played in 38 games the last three seasons.

When the Cowboys signed free agent wide receivers Allen Hurns and Deonte Thompson, many have assumed Bryant must be done. Jones has said he wants Bryant back but has not stated unequivocally that he will be.

But he has said that he likes how the team is shaping up at the wide receiver position (via the team’s website):

“I like our mix. I think these two guys we signed and what we might look at, at any level of the draft, plus what we might get worked out with Dez, gives us a good-looking receiver outlook.”

But he also made it clear what he expects to see from the group in 2018:

“We can live with that kind of allocation at receiver, but we’ve got to have production,” Jones said. “In other words, it’s got to really provide not only big-play potential, but it’s also got to keep the defenses honest so that (running back) Zeke (Elliott) can be the player he can be.”
