Jason Witten intends to play another season in the NFL in 2020, but he understands that it could result in him playing for another team besides the Dallas Cowboys. Ahead of free agency, Jerry Jones opened up about Witten's future in Dallas.

“I would hope that he would not ever be anything but a Cowboy,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of TheAthletic.com. “I do think he can play. I think he can make a real contribution to the Cowboys.”

Following the 2017 season, Witten chose to retire from the NFL after 15 seasons with the Cowboys. The longtime tight end of the Cowboys decided to hang up his cleats in favor of accepting a gig on Monday Night Football.

However, after spending a season away from football, Witten decided to unretire and return to Dallas in 2019. Despite being 37-years-old, Witten was able to record 63 receptions for 529 yards and four touchdowns this season.

But with a new coaching staff arriving, Witten may not be part of Mike McCarthy's plans on offense. On the other hand, Jones believes that Witten can still have a prominent role on the Cowboys.

Regardless of what the Cowboys plan to do, Witten's first choice in free agency is to remain in Dallas. If the Cowboys are content with moving on from Witten, Blake Jarwin would likely see an expanded role in 2020.

As of now, the Cowboys don't seem to be losing any sleep over whether or not to re-sign Witten this offseason. After all, their main focus should be on getting a long-term deal done with Dak Prescott.
