The Dallas Cowboys put on a rough showing in the opening round of the 2022 NFL playoffs. Although the game ended with a close score, the San Francisco 49ers essentially had control from the beginning. Head coach Mike McCarthy revealed some information about how his team approached their playoff matchup.

According to Ed Werder, McCarthy claims the Cowboys were nervous heading into the game. Apparently, he sensed it early on and believes it's the reason why Dallas ultimately lost. Considering this is a professional sports team, it's hard to imagine that nerves literally got the best of them.

This is a horrible excuse as to why Dallas lost to the 49ers. San Francisco controlled nearly facet of the game. Additionally, the nerves couldn't have played that much of a factor, as the Cowboys nearly came back to win. Some nerves were likely present, as it's natural for humans to feel that way in a big moment. Even so, this just seems like a lame excuse that Mike McCarthy is choosing to believe.

The Cowboys have an excellent roster. They have a high-powered offense coupled with a solid defense. However, the lack of discipline and play-calling is what hurt this franchise in the playoffs. A year of development during the offseason should improve the defense in general and the offense is likely to remain intact. The biggest change that must happen is the coaching staff.

That doesn't necessarily mean Mike McCarthy should be fired, but he should certainly be on the hot seat. Between his horrific time management, play-calling, and lack of disciplining his team, the Cowboys find themselves needing more from their head coach. Hopefully, McCarthy makes the proper adjustments in the offseason and coaches his team more efficiently.

If not, the Cowboys will be doomed to repeat an early exit from the playoffs next year as well.
