The Chicago Cubs are heading into what could be a major offseason of change after missing the playoffs last season. Change has already occurred on the front lines for the Cubs with Joe Maddon leaving town and David Ross coming back to take over as the team's new manager.
Now, the Cubs are shifting their attention to the roster. One thing that they want to find this offseason is another impact starting pitcher.
According to a report from Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, the Cubs are wanting to find an impact starting pitcher but are not going to pursue the top level free agents. That leaves names like Dallas Kuechel, Cole Hamels, and Rick Porcello as potential targets.
It wouldn't be too shocking to see the Cubs consider bringing Hamels back. He hasn't been amazing in Chicago, but he is a veteran presence that has made a positive impact. His price tag also won't be too terribly high.
Kuechel would be an intriguing addition for the Cubs after spending this past season with the Atlanta Braves. He is not a “superstar” by any means, but Chicago doesn't necessarily need huge names. They could also turn to the trade market with some of their MLB talent.
All of that being said, the Cubs are obviously looking to make a couple sizable moves this offseason. If they want to get back into World Series contention, they need to address another starter, the bullpen, and find consistency at the plate.
Theo Epstein certainly has his work cut out for him this offseason.
