The Philadelphia Eagles have seemingly committed to quarterback Nick Foles for their playoff run. However, it appears head coach Doug Pederson still plans on keeping quarterback Carson Wentz around as a contingency plan.

The Eagles have kept Wentz on the active roster despite being ruled out with a back injury. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Pederson says he would rather be safe than sorry.

“Well, listen, I mean, we keep winning,” Pederson said. “We keep putting ourselves in a position to be successful. You never know. You never know what next week might hold. So we just keep that — we’ve done it a lot this year. We kept Darren [Sproles] up all season. We’ve done it with other players this year. Sidney Jones is another one that we keep alive. We keep these guys coming and we’ll see where they are at in another week.”

Pederson's cautious approach is certainly understandable. There has been some concern regarding Foles status after dealing with a rib injury over the last few weeks. It appears to be still hindering the veteran as the season goes on. All it takes is one devastating hit to potentially knock Foles out of a game.

At that point, their backup option would be quarterback Nate Sudfeld. Although Sudfeld showed some promise in the season finale, it is safe to assume that Philadelphia would rather pin their hopes on an injured Wentz than an inexperienced quarterback. The Eagles' star had even expressed his interest in potentially playing through the pain prior to the playoffs. While Pederson has kept Wentz on the roster in case of an emergency, it seems he will only be used as a last resort.
