A couple weeks ago, defensive end Chris Long was still unsure whether he would still play with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2018 season. But the Eagles sure gave him a good reason to stay as they restructured his contract to give him a nice raise.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates:

Sources: the Eagles re-did the contract of DE Chris Long, guaranteeing him $3M this season. His base salary jumped to $2.5M guaranteed (from $1M non-guaranteed), with the team eliminating his $750k in per-game roster bonuses & $750k in incentives. Doing a good player a solid.

However, Michael Silver of NFL Network reports that Long is still thinking about whether to accept that new deal.

If Long does end up taking it, it'll represent a significant pay increase for him after he played for just $1 million last season. He then decided to altruistically donate the entirety of his salary to charities. It remains to be seen whether he’ll pledge to do so again this year, but if he does, he’ll have a bit more to give thanks to the Eagles.

In just his first season in Philadelphia last year, Long was a key contributor to the team’s dominant pass rush, which was a big factor in their run all the way to the Super Bowl. He finished with five sacks and four forced fumbles while playing all 16 games for the second season in a row.

Now that he’ll be generously rewarded for his services, the Eagles will hope Long continues to be a big piece in Philly’s impressively deep defensive end rotation. Aside from Long, Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett will be joined by veteran pass rusher Michael Bennett, who was acquired from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason.
