Veteran defensive end Chris Long has wrapped up his first season with the Philadelphia Eagles, and what a year it was as he helped the franchise earn its first Super Bowl win. He played a significant role on the defensive side of the ball with both his play and leadership that proved to an instrumental part.

However, there has been some uncertainty about whether the 32-year-old would return with the Eagles next season for the second year of his two-year, $4.5 million deal with $2.3 million in salary and bonuses. During a recent interview with Charlotte Wilder of SB Nation, Long sounded noncommital to being back in Philadelphia for the 2018 campaign.

“I don’t know yet. I’m working something out right now. At 32, you have limited time left to play the game you love, so the role has to be exactly right for me. I can still play at a high level, and I’m hungry to play, but every player my age has to weigh how they want to go out. The 25-year-old me would tell the 32-year-old me to take the two rings and go start the next chapter in life, but it’s never simple when you still have gas left in the tank. We’ll have to see what shakes out. So short answer, I have no idea. I love Philly though. The city would make it hard to walk away.”

What has contributed to a possibly clouded future with the Eagles could be the acquisition of Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Bennett from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this week, which was ironically a move that he helped push for the team to do. Long has shown that he still has plenty left in the tank to be an effective pass rusher despite totaling just 5.0 sacks this past season.

Long has is now heading into the next phase of his career having finished up his 10th season in the league. His comments do fuel the notion that he could be reassessing his NFL future with a set amount of years left that he believes he will play. There are likely many factors that are weighing on him that could be leading to him voicing uncertainty about his future with the Eagles.

Keep in mind, the Eagles could make a decision on his contract that has the option to void keeping under contract from 2019-2021 that must be exercised by March 14. In other words, there should more clarity on this situation in the coming days.
