The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former New York Jets quarterback Christian Hackenberg on Sunday, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The Eagles are signing QB Christian Hackenberg, source said. Not a reflection on health of Wentz/Foles or anything else — just a chance to try developing another QB with talent, as they have with Nate Sudfeld.

Hackenberg, 23, was a second-round pick by the Jets in 2016. While he clearly possessed a lot of talent, he was also highly inaccurate coming out of college. He was unable to develop and fix that glaring flaw in the NFL, which was why he was traded earlier this offseason to the Oakland Raiders for a conditional seventh-round pick. He didn’t play even a single meaningful snap in his two seasons for the Jets.

Hackenberg didn’t last very long with the Raiders, who waived him mere weeks after acquiring him. He had most recently met with the New England Patriots in June but was unable to secure a deal.

Hackenberg appears unlikely to figure into the Eagles’ long-term plans at quarterback. Apart from starter Carson Wentz and reigning Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, they also have Nate Sudfeld and Joe Callahan backing them up.

With Wentz is still not yet quite ready to return following his torn ACL and Foles is just returning from his own injury, Hack’s addition should be no more than a stopgap measure during preseason until they have their full complement of QBs back healthy.

But in the event that the Eagles decide to hold onto Hack, he'll be in an ideal situation to fulfill his true potential given Doug Pederson's strong track record of developing quarterbacks.
