Veteran defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has decided to take his talents to where the reigning Super Bowl champions reside, signing a one-year, $2.6 million, fully-guaranteed deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. While his former team, the Detroit Lions, reportedly presented Ngata an identical offer, he still chose the Eagles, and his reason is simple: he thinks he is as a better fit in the Eagles’ system.

This is according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network during an interview, which you could watch below.

As what Rapoport noted, Ngata factored in his familiarity with a defensive system in weighing his options. While Ngata does not have to adjust that much in terms of the environment had he decided to stay put in Detroit, the entry of new head coach Matt Patricia apparently meant that the 34-year-old two-time First-Team All-Pro will have to adapt and learn a new system. With the Eagles, Ngata feels he could easily align with defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’ patterns.

Haloti Ngata played in only five games last season, as he sustained a bicep injury that caused him to finish the campaign on the injured reserve list. Ngata’s absence had a tremendous impact on the Lions’ defense, particularly against the run. Before he suffered the injury, the Lions were allowing only 74.6 rushing yards per game. That’s way better than the 129.7 rushing yards allowed by Detroit following Ngata’s injury.

Ngata’s addition to the Eagles gives Philly yet another fantastic piece in their already formidable defensive line. Ngata’s experience is a big plus, too, as the five-time Pro Bowler has won a Super Bowl before with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013.
