After what was judged by fans as a successful weekend, Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto drops a shocking take after the Mexican Grand Prix.

With Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, Ferrari overtook McLaren in the F1 constructor standings. Yet, Binotto stresses the team could have done more.

“We were hoping for a better weekend in terms of performance, but overall I think as a team result, it has been a great team result,” Binotto said on Sunday.

“The two drivers collaborated well. In terms of team strategy, we tried whatever we could to catch Gasly, but we couldn’t.”

McLaren and Ferrari have been back and forth this season in terms of placing third, due to remarkable performances from Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo.

“In terms of points and championship, we are in third position now, 13.5 points ahead of McLaren, four races to go. So I think it's still a very tight battle,” the F1 boss shares.

“Certainly McLaren struggled as well the last weekend. Let's see now in Brazil in a week's time. Hopefully we may consolidate what we have seen today.”

Since the middle of the season, fans have realized that Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are the two championship contenders. True enough, with just four races to go, Verstappen is holding the lead and trying to outlast the seven-time F1 world champion.

Meanwhile, Red Bull is only a point away from Mercedes in the constructor championship, but both are far away from McLaren or Ferrari.
