Red Bull's head of driver development, Helmut Marko, reacts to Max Verstappen's astonishing overtake on his F1 rivals, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Verstappen managed to pull off a spectacular move on the opening lap despite failing to qualify for pole position before the race, giving him the lead early on.

“That was an almost perfect day,” former F1 driver Marko told German motorsport outlet Speed Week. “I can’t believe where Max braked in the first corner! That was a braking maneuver beyond the realms of possibility.”

“Our form curve is on the rise, now we have to achieve a one-two soon and secure the gap to Mercedes,” he said. “Nobody in recent years had won from pole position here in Mexico, so that had made us optimistic. Our car is fast everywhere.”

Hamilton and his boss, Toto Wolff, commented on Verstappen's overtake, suggesting that Bottas could've avoided a move like that if he had made the right decision.

Instead, the spectacular move aided Verstappen to win the Mexican Grand Prix, with his teammate, Sergio Perez, claiming P3 at his home race.

Red Bull capped off a crucial weekend, pulling them closer to Mercedes in the constructor's championship. Meanwhile, Verstappen extends his lead over Hamilton, seeking his first F1 title.
