A Simms is back in the NFL. Not Chris — who's doing his thing at Pro Football Talk — or the 63-year-old Phil, who also dabbles in the media. Matt Simms, a 30-year-old former Tennessee Volunteer is back in the league, as the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, are signing him.

The Falcons' third-string quarterback Kurt Benkert suffered a severe toe injury in the NFL's Hall of Fame game on Thursday. The second-year quarterback hailing from Virginia looked impressive during the preseason game. He tallied 185 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-34 passing, but ultimately may be out for the rest of preseason. This is where Simms comes into play, as he, along with Matt Schaub, will take the bulk of preseason snaps.

Simms went undrafted in 2012, then stuck with the New York Jets until 2014. He later signed on with the Buffalo Bills, then the Atlanta Falcons. Simms played three preseasons with the Falcons from 2015 to 2017. For the majority of his first stint as a Falcon, he played on the practice squad, then was released after the 2017 preseason.

Earlier this year, Simms joined the now-defunct Alliance of American Football league. He started the season on the bench and filled in sparingly throughout. In the AAF, playing with the Atlanta Legends, Simms threw for 842 yards, two touchdowns, and seven interceptions on a 59.8% completion rate. In the NFL — with the Jets only — Simms threw for 195 yards and a pick and touchdown each on a 48.7% completion rate.

It should be mentioned that the Falcons also have three quarterbacks named Matt on the roster. Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub, and Matt Simms create an all-time Matt lineup.
