A former Olympic lightweight boxer in Felix Verdejo found himself on the headlines for shocking reasons. Verdejo is facing federal charges for the death of a 27-year-old woman named Keishla Rodriguez. After going missing for a couple of days, the body of the pregnant woman was reportedly found lifeless in a lagoon in Puerto Rico, per ESPN.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the former boxer was charged with kidnapping and carjacking resulting in death and intentionally killing an unborn child due to the incident. With the search warrant filed against him, Vermejo decided to turn himself to the hands of the federal agents on Sunday night.

A criminal complaint detailed the occurrences as it accused Felix Verdejo of punching the victim in the face and injecting her with a syringe filled with an unidentified substance. It was also reported that he allegedly wrapped her arms and feet with wire and tied a heavy block to her before throwing her off a bridge at 8:30 a.m. last Thursday.

Moreover, Felix Verdejo also shot Rodriguez's body as it fell into the lagoon. The complaint stated that a witness became an aid and helped the former boxer in his attempt to kill Rodriguez.

As it turned out, the victim was reportedly carrying her child with Verdejo. Though the boxer is already married to another woman, the two individuals remained in contact as they reportedly knew each other since middle school. Rodriguez was also able to alert her mother, Keila Ortiz, that she was bound to meet Felix Verdejo who was going to see the results of a pregnancy test.

Top Rank has been promoting Verdejo's bouts ever since he turned pro back in 2012. The management released a statement regarding the situation on Sunday as they immediately removed Felix Verdejo's page on their website on the same night.

“Top Rank's thoughts and prayers are with Keishla Marlen Rodriguez Ortiz's family and friends, and with all those in mourning,” the statement read. “We are deeply disturbed by the news reports, and we will continue to monitor developments in the case as it progresses.”

Felix Verdejo has amassed a 21-2 overall pro record with 17 KOs. The 27-year-old last fought against Masayoshi Nakatani for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title back in December of 2020 but suffered a TKO defeat. He is also a former Olympian who bannered the flag of Puerto Rico back during the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
