Youtuber couple Matt and Shelby of Girlfriend Reviews came forward with a video to explain the harassment they've been experiencing. Over the past eight months since they made a video on The Last of Us 2, Matt and Shelby shared that they've been the target of harassment of a community on Reddit dedicated to trashing on the game.
They mostly didn't react to the community, which found a home in the now-deleted r/TheLastOfUs2. However, Shelby felt the need to defend herself against two particular posts. She posted screenshots of their posts on the subreddit on her Twitter account and called them out for their harassment. One of the posts was by u/TheRealRogerEbert, who also has since deleted their account. After Shelby's post, u/TheRealRogerEbert started alleging that Girlfriend Review fans have been sending him death threats as a reaction to her tweet.
The The Last of Us “fan” continued to keep up the act. They later posted screenshots allegedly coming from Girlfriend Reviews fans sending him death threats. u/TheRealRogerEbert escalated tensions and encouraged people from the subreddit to disparage the couple. They even went so far to send a direct email to the couple, threatening to litigate.
However, Matt and Shelby were able to see past through u/TheRealRogerEbert, and determined that the Redditor has been using fake accounts to send themselves the death threats. While Matt and Shelby were careful to remind everyone to take death threats seriously, these ones received by u/TheRealRogerEbert were fakes. Matt and Shelby deconstructed u/TheRealRogerEbert's claims on their email thread, which led the harasser to panic. This led to the person deleting their account, and then even their email.
