The next iteration of the Gran Turismo racing series has been put on the back burner, for now.

Gran Turismo 7 was initially scheduled for a release on PlayStation sometime in 2021. However, a representative stated during GQ's interview with PlayStation's Jim Ryan the game has been delayed to 2022. The representative cited the coronavirus pandemic as a key reason for the project being delayed:

“GT7 has been impacted by Covid-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022,” the representative said, via GQ. “With the ongoing pandemic, it’s a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months. We’ll share more specifics on GT7’s release date when available.”

Developers had been hoping to launch the game on the PS5 in the first half of 2021. But gamers will have to wait for the next installation of the immensely popular racing series.

Gran Turismo releases have been few and far between in recent years. The last was Gran Turismo Sport, which was released on PS4 back in 2017. Gran Turismo is the first “numbered” edition since 2013.

The original version of the game debuted all the way back in 1997. It has since become one of the most dominant racing franchises, grossing over $80 million in global sales back in 2018. Reaching that benchmark made Gran Turismo the second-highest grossing racing game ever, behind only the Mario Kart franchise.

Gamers will have to wait at least another year before getting their hands on this highly anticipated title.
