Cleveland Guardians fans were upset after the team signed only two free agents during the offseason, neither of which would be labeled as stars. However, there may be reason for excitement in Cleveland in the near future. MLB insider Hector Gomez reported on Tuesday that contract extension discussions between Jose Ramirez and the Guardians were heating up.

Gomez has been on a streak lately, as he was also amongst the first MLB insiders to report on Ketel Marte’s extension with the Diamondbacks.

Ramirez, 29, has been one of the best players in the MLB over the past few seasons.

He is a three-time All-Star who has finished within the top 6 in MVP voting on four separate occasions. Ramirez hit .266/.355/.538 with an .893 OPS in 2021. Additionally, the slugging third baseman clubbed 36 home runs and posted 103 RBI’s to go along with 27 stolen bases. His mixture of power, speed, and defense make Jose Ramirez one of the most balanced superstars in the sport

Cleveland’s organizational direction is fairly unclear at the moment. They have made the postseason in four of the past six seasons, but have also traded away a number of stars during that stretch such as Francisco Lindor and Corey Kluber. The Guardians missed the postseason in 2021 and there were conversations about trading Ramirez and other players earlier in the offseason.

But those rumors seemed to have run dry as the Guardians are now reportedly working on an extension with the superstar.

Jose Ramirez and the Guardians will look to make these extension talks turn into a long term contract prior to Opening Day.
