Atlanta Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk says the franchise has been targeting Jeff Teague since the beginning of the season.

The Hawks acquired Teague on Thursday from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Schlenk says he has interest in re-signing Teague next summer when he becomes an unrestricted free agent, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic:

Schlenk said the Hawks have been targeting Jeff Teague since the beginning of the season, and they are interested in bringing him back next season when his contract expires if everything goes well for the next 41 games.

“That was one of the areas going into the summer that we knew we were going to have to address is point guard,” Schlenk said. “This is a great opportunity to have a dress rehearsal to see how it goes. We are hopeful. We think Jeff has a lot of good basketball left in him. We’re going to see how it goes, but in a perfect world, it would be a great scenario.”

It's all come full circle for Teague, who began his NBA career with the Hawks. The veteran will back up Trae Young at the point guard spot.

Teague is averaging 13.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists this season. He's shooting 44.8 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from beyond the arc and 86.8 percent from the free-throw line.

The Hawks are hoping Teague will give them a boost off the bench and help the team win some games. Atlanta currently has the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
