The Miami Heat recently lost shooting guard Tyler Herro to the NBA's health and safety protocols due to a positive COVID-19 test.  However, Herro is now out of the protocols and appears to be on track to play against the New York Knicks on Wednesday:

Herro hasn't played since Jan. 17 because of his bout with COVID. The Heat have played three games since Herro was sidelined, going 2-1 with wins over the Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers, plus a close loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

The 22-year-old is having a bounce-back season after underwhelming a bit in 2020-21. Herro made waves as a rookie, especially in the bubble, but he didn't take the leap in Year 2 that many expected. There were a bunch of trade rumors surrounding the young guard, but Miami kept him and has seen him ramp up his output this season, which has been needed with so many health problems.

Herro is averaging 20.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 43.0% from the field and 38.8% from 3-point range. Both Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo have missed extended time this season, so Herro stepping up to the plate has been necessary.

Despite all the health issues, the Heat are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference with a 30-17 record. The top of the East is extremely bunched up right now, with the sixth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers just 2.5 games back of Miami. It's going to be a competitive fight down the stretch and into the playoffs, so the Heat will need this level of play from Tyler Herro as he returns.
