The Charlotte Hornets have their guy in James Borrego, who came over after being an assistant on San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich's staff since 2015.

Even though he has high hopes for what he can help build the Hornets into, he wants everyone to know he doesn't have magic fairy dust that will help the team win a ton of games overnight.

For Borrego, he specialized in player development with the Spurs, and he knows that is what's needed for this team to start having success again.

“I think our biggest room for growth is internal,” Borrego said Friday via Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observor. “There’s a group of young guys that, after this summer, should take a major leap.

“If they take a major leap, our roster changes significantly.”

The development of the players isn't going to happen overnight, and Borrego knows that. He stresses to develop, not everything can be improved at once, but the right steps have to be taken to see the best results.

“My philosophy is you maximize what they do well, first,” Borrego said. “Don’t try to complete the entire puzzle” on the fly.

“We get lost as coaches in trying to create this incredible player overnight, and we end up losing our player. …We’ll identify a few areas, two or three areas, that we want to focus on right now in the summertime and we’ll work on those.”

If Borrego can get everyone that's on the roster right now to just improve on one or two things, this roster will look a lot better, and that's before they even try to make a splash in free agency.
