Despite losing on the field, the Jacksonville Jaguars felt like winners as they clinched the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft over the weekend. The Jaguars are 1-14 on the season, while the New York Jets won a second straight game to get to 2-13. Assuming he decides to forgo the rest of his eligibility at Clemson, Trevor Lawrence will almost certainly be a Jaguar next year.

Tony Wiggins, the host of the daily Locked On Jaguars podcast, makes the argument that the Jaguars are in a prime position to build as soon as Lawrence walks in the door:

Wiggins: You have to be bad before you can be good in some situations, and this goes right back to what I said years ago. Dave Caldwell and camp took this franchise when Shahid Kahn purchased this team from Wayne Weaver, Dave Caldwell took this team over, for years people gave them mulligans and gave them passes and I always said, do you see this roster? This roster is the worst roster in the league. It was as if you were expecting immediate results, but I tried to tell people back then, this is an easy build and this is an easy job because they are not married to old bad contracts. They also have a lot of salary cap room and a lot of money that they can spend. They are going to have high draft picks. The cupboard is bare. It is like going, you do not have to clean the lot, man, before you build your house. It is already clear, and you got all of your permits. Just start building. This is almost the same situation except for the fact that now they have the No. 1 pick and maybe the best prospect in the last 30 years sitting there.
