Veteran wide receiver Rishard Matthews admitted recently that he might not sign with another team this season. But lo and behold, less than a week after saying that, he suddenly has a new team: the New York Jets.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Matthews is set to join the Jets’ receiving corps.

Matthews had previously worked out for the Jets about a week ago. He also had workouts with the Browns and Cardinals but was unable to secure a deal.

The Jets’ Matthews signing comes on the heels of their release of injured wide receiver Terrelle Pryor. Leading receiver Quincy Enunwa is also still out with an ankle injury.

Matthews, 29, started out the 2018 season with the Tennessee Titans. However, he asked for and was granted a release in September due to his lack of opportunities within the new system.

In two prior seasons with the Titans, though, he proved to be quite a productive receiver. He had 118 catches for 1,740 yards and 13 touchdowns during that time.

Matthews now joins a Jets wide receiver depth chart that isn’t particularly deep following Pryor’s release and Enunwa’s injury. Robby Anderson, Jermaine Kearse, and Andre Roberts were their three remaining wideouts. However, Pryor could also return to the fold once he recovers from his recent groin injury.
