The New York Jets currently hold the second overall selection in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft. It's speculated the front office chooses a quarterback with their first pick, causing trade rumors around Sam Darnold's availability. The Jets face a peculiar situation, as the team could opt to build around Darnold rather than draft a new rookie quarterback.

However, the Jets are in a great position to rebuild. They have a ton of cap space, plenty of draft picks, and a new head coach and general manager that seem to be on the same page. The real question is, what to do with their first pick of the draft?

According to Josh McCown, New York is in a prime position. For now, the trade market for Darnold is dwindling, which creates the opportunity for the Jets to have both, Sam Darnold and a new rookie quarterback. McCown breaks down the upside of that situation for the Jets.

Via Rich Cimini of ESPN:

“Can it be done? Absolutely,” McCown said. “In my mind, if you can't get the value now for him, that's absolutely how you go about it. I wouldn't even call it a competition. I would just say, ‘We're going to go with Sam as the guy and bring Zach along.' If Sam knocks it out of the park, we'll re-evaluate where we are a year from now.”

Not an ideal situation, but the franchise may find themselves in a good position this time next year. If Darnold remains on the roster for the 2021 season, he'll have one last opportunity to prove his worth.

“Sam would embrace it and be helpful, but he'd also go out and work hard and try to make the most of the opportunity to play this year — and put it back on them and make them have to make a tough decision at the end of the year. I think, if that happens, really and truly, everybody wins.”

Only time will tell what happens in New York in regards to the quarterback position. The first round of the draft takes place on April 29th.
