The Washington Football Team has one of the most amazing comeback stories in NFL history with Alex Smith.

And according to John Keim of ESPN, legendary quarterback Joe Theismann believes that is enough to award him with the Comeback Player of the Year distinction—before the season even happens.

“He has gone through a lot more than I had to go through,” Theismann told ESPN. “For me it was a question of the leg healing and then trying to do certain things required of the quarterback position. Alex came within 24 hours of losing his leg. I didn’t wind up with complications; he wound up with a tremendous amount of complications. It wasn’t just healing from a broken leg. The mountain he had to climb is so much greater.

“No matter what happens he’s already won the award for comeback player of the year.”

This is hard to argue with, to be honest. Even if Smith ends up riding the bench as the backup to Washington second-year signal-caller Dwayne Haskins all year, this is incredible.

Smith had one of the most gruesome injuries in football history in 2018. It was eerily reminiscent of the injury that ended Theismann's Super Bowl type of career with the then Redskins. He was about to lose his leg. Seriously, they were going to amputate it. He had seventeen surgeries. That is unheard of.

Now here we are in 2020, and Smith has been cleared for football activity. Washington has taken him off the PUP (physically unable to perform) list.

Smith could sit on the bench all year, and the fact that he was able even to suit up and had the ability to go in a game could for the team formerly known as “Redskins,” be enough for some people to vote for him. How could you possibly write a better comeback script than what Smith has gone through?

No matter what happens this year, Smith has earned the respect of just about everyone. And it appears, Theismann believes the Washington vet should win the Comeback Player of the Year award no matter what.
