The Sacramento Kings decided to decline the $3.97 million team-option on Harry Giles' contract for the 2020-21 season, according to Sean Cunningham of ABC10.

The decision regarding Giles' team-option came on the same day that the Kings elected to accept team-options for De'Aaron Fox and Marvin Bagley. It is worth noting that the team also chose to decline the team-option of Caleb Swanigan.

It is worth noting that there was a belief that Giles was part of the Kings' young core that they would build around long-term as soon as a year ago. However, the decision to decline his final-year team-option “isn't a total surprise,” according to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee.

Their decision isn’t a total surprise given his injury history, but he was considered a part of the team’s young core as recently as a year ago.

At one point, Giles was considered the top prospect in his high school recruiting class but the momentum of his draft stock was ultimately the effect of multiple knee injuries. He showed positive signs of potential during his lone season with Duke and that prompted the Kings to use the 20th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft to select him.

Giles, 21, is coming off a rookie season with averages of 7.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists within 14.1 minutes per game. He played the majority of his minutes at the power forward position while also sliding over to the center spot for a considerable portion of his minutes.

After this season, Giles will become an unrestricted free agent. It will be interesting to see how many teams are bought into his long-term potential as a player and how that could translate into his next contract.
