The Sacramento Kings, fresh off a surprisingly competitive 2018-19 season, are apparently hoping to make a splash in free agency. According to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7, the Kings have eyes for Orlando Magic big man Nikola Vucevic this summer, and are prepared to make incumbent starting center Willie Cauley-Stein available via trade if they're able to sign him.

Vucevic, a first-round pick back in 2011 who was a centerpiece of the original Dwight Howard trade one year later, enjoyed by far the finest season of his career in 2018-19. He averaged career-highs of 20.8 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 54.9 percent from the field, an especially impressive number given his affinity for post-ups and jumpers. Vucevic took significant strides defensively playing under first-year Orlando coach Steve Clifford, too, serving as the last line of protection for a top-eight defense that performed a touch worse when he was off the floor.

Despite a career campaign for which he was rewarded with his first All-Star berth, Vucevic still isn't entrenched as a building block for the Magic. At 28-years-old, in the thick of his prime, he's on a different timeline than the team's young core, and his presence would hinder the development of Mo Bamba, last year's No. 6 six overall pick, who struggled as a rookie. Vucevic, solid as he was on that end last season, is a poor fit for the identity the Magic are developing on defense, too.

Sacramento, meanwhile, will have ample cap space to add impact players this summer. Whether Vucevic, who will command a starting salary well into the $20 million range, is the right target for a young team that pushes the pace at every opportunity and has enticing young bigs like Marvin Bagley and Harry Giles on the roster, though, is a matter worth debating.
