After a surprising 18-18 start to the 2017-18 NBA season, the New York Knicks have struggled to begin the new year. Along with a challenging January schedule, Kristaps Porzingis suffered a season-ending injury against the Milwaukee Bucks.

As the Knicks are currently on a seven-game losing streak, Porzingis posted a message to fans on Instagram:

On my way home from the hospital. First of all I want to thank you for all the love and support. Im attacking my rehab right away. I truly believe that with consistent hard work, patience and positive attitude I’ll come back stronger, better and sharper than ever. Much love ❤️🔶🔷🇱🇻

Prior to the season-ending injury, Porzingis was averaging 22.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 48 games as the new face of the Knicks. Originally the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the 22-year-old proved he could handle the new responsibilities after Carmelo Anthony was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With the Knicks 7.5 games back of the Miami Heat for the final spot in the Eastern Conference, New York will likely shift their attention to their young prospects. Along with Frank Ntilikina, the Knicks acquired Emmanuel Mudiay at the trade deadline in hopes that a fresh start can reinvigorate his career.

For the remaining 24 games of the season, player development and improving their chances at the 2018 NBA Draft will be major keys. Once Porzingis returns next year, the hope is an established young core will attract free agents to speed up the rebuilding process.
